CATRIN GROSSE

At the end of July 2020, I designed together with 2 younger female artists an exhibition in GEORADO Dorfhain which inspired me to try round formats.
This has been a challenge, because I mostly work figurative and so the circle requires completely different ways of composing the picture.
The work began with smaller formats (diameter 20cm-70cm).
Since we, Agor artists, chose the circle as a symbol for “opening“, the fascination grew bigger, not only as a picture shape but also as asymbol for an “opening“ of culture.
Either in terms of “opening“ after lockdown (seeing the light through the hole at the end of the tunnel) but also the new focus on the rich culture of Wales. Finally it opened a magnifying glass on my own culture and made me sensitive to try to open the look through the keyhole for other cultures, too.
The deeper I went into the circles, the size got bigger and the figures interacted more.
One picture is called Palucca School- a 1,60 diameter canvas painting. The scene got inspired by the famous Gret Palucca, who founded the Dresden Dance School in 1925. The Palucca Dance Academy still shapes modern expressive dance today.
